here’s the thing: trump is not mentally ill and his behavior isn’t indicative of mental illness–it’s indicative of white supremacy

so no there’s no point in pop psychologists diagnosing him for clickbait articles and for people to make snappy tweets and posts about his sanity

it’s not funny and it does nothing but reinforce the stigma around mental illness and perpetuate the belief that mentally ill people are inherently dangerous and abusive

ive said it once and i’ll say it again on many posts, the person who wrote the section on narcissistic personality disorder literally said to stop using the term “narcissist” or “mentally ill” for trump because he clearly doesnt have any sort of cluster-b personality disorder or mental illness:

Allen Frances says he’s tired of “amateur diagnosticians” insisting that U.S. President Donald Trump has narcissistic personality disorder. And he should know. As the chair of the task force that wrote the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV, Frances literally helped write the definition of NPD.

“When people are bad, they should be labelled appropriately and denounced for their behaviours. We should not use mental illness to slur someone,” he said. “It’s a very strange society that thinks that it’s somehow worse to call Donald Trump mentally ill than to call him evil.” – Allen Frances, the writer of the DSM for NPD.

Asked why he felt the need to respond, Frances told As It Happens guest host Helen Mann: “I don’t think Donald Trump qualifies for a mental disorder.” ”

Also, here’s an entire article Allen Frances wrote about how trump isn’t mentally ill and how it harms actual mentally ill people.

Can it be argued he is a narcisicist without saying he has NPD?

My current feelings are that we have a gross habit of pathologizing any behavior that falls outside of a very restricted bell curve.

He is obviously not distressed by his self involved behavior and is neither inhibited by it in his life. He’s the president for Christ’s sake yknow?

You can be a dramatic person without having HPD and you can be a selfish, self absorbed person without having NPD.

Saying he has a mental disorder is often used as a sort of red herring to take away from his agency in white supremacy and clearly stated nationalism.

So while I think the point being made is that “narcissist” is a direct call to that pathologization. I find that normally a colloquial use of it is very much separated from its clinical origins—i don’t have NPD and can’t say for sure.

Each one of these women has an amazing story to tell, but we know nothing about them. This history is hidden from us, because they are women of color.

Their names are Dr Anandibai Joshi, class of 1886; Dr Kei Okami, class of 1889; and Dr Sabat Islambooly, class of 1890.

Dr Joshi was the first Indian woman to earn an MD; her Wikipedia page has the broad details of her life story. She argued that she should go to medical school due to “a growing need for Hindu lady doctors in India”, and was apparently the only student with the stomach to last through a demonstration autopsy of an infant. She died of tuberculosis in 1887, aged just 21 years old, but was such a remarkable figure that her first biography was published in 1888; since then there have been multiple biographies, a novel, a play, and a Hindi serial about her life. Drexel University has quite a few more documents about her in their archives.

Dr Okami was the first Japanese woman to earn a degree in Western medicine from a Western university; she also has a Wikipedia page which gives an overview of her life. Among other things she was appointed to head the gynaecology unit at Jikei Hospital in Tokyo, but resigned after Emperor Meiji visited the hospital and refused to receive her because she was a woman.

Dr Islambooly is the least well-known; her life was mostly undocumented after she returned home to Syria as the country’s first female physician. She was apparently a Kurdish Jewish woman who later moved to Cairo, where she died in 1941.

Here’s an article about their medical school, mentioning some of the other pioneering women who attended it.

What happens!!?? I want this romance…. so cute

Ummm im here for vintage lesbians

i’m sure someone probably commented on this post already but this is calamity jane, they eventually move into a tiny cabin together and sing a song about how “a woman’s touch” can fix anything. i watched this movie daily when i was about 7 and now i’m a dyke

my butch lesbian professor who is well into her sixties had told me that this was her first real exposure to the concept that a woman could not only be attracted to other women, but be butch while doing it. she said this movie propelled her into her sexuality with a sense of pride and remains a cornerstone of her coming-out journey. in short, representation matters and always has.
