After decades of cultural stigma, desi LGBTQ+ people are finding ways to come out through nightlife

Club Kali is the world’s largest Asian music LGBTQ+ club night and has been running since 1995. Rita set it up for South Asians who wanted to surround themselves with the people and music they had grown up with.

It’s something Rita does not take lightly. She feels so protective over the de facto family created during Club Kali that she has a number of protections in place – including no photographs. It might appear unnecessarily vigilant, but she is convinced of the need for a safe space for visitors to come out, both literally and metaphorically.
